BAFTS is a network of independent fair trade shops
across the UK. There are over 100 BAFTS fair trade retailers in
the UK. This number is growing by the month and we hope to increase
awareness of fair trade groups and products that are developed and
sourced through ethical trade.
The main objectives of BAFTS are to:
- Promote fair trade retailing across the UK
- Raise the profile of fair trade on the High Street
- Provide a point of contact and communication about fair trade
- Exchange ideas amongst members regarding all fair trade news
- Provide links to other fair trade organisations such as WFTO
(World Fair Trade Organization)
- Keeping members informed of important fair trade calendar dates
such as Fair Trade Fortnight and World Fair Trade Day (9th May
2009)
BAFTS recognises Nomads Clothing as a fair trade on line shop who
are engaged actively in supporting producers, raising awareness
and campaigning for changes in the rules and practices of conventional
international trade.

Make a Difference: We need and value your support
Development of our collection includes many traditional
hand processes which ensure the livelihoods of many workers in Rajasthan.
In particular drought ridden regions depend on our orders for the
continuation of village life. Some of our handicrafts also support
women’s groups and development of children’s education
in and around Delhi. BAFTS recognises our efforts to promote traditional
craft in many of our collections. Your purchase of traditionally
made products has a direct impact on the livelihoods of the crafts
people who make the garments, jewellery and bags. Make a difference
and buy something that is uniquely made by hand.
Nomads supports Crafts People and promotes Traditional Craft
- HAND TIE
DYE – This ancient art of tying cotton and dying the
fabric in multi coloured designs is a craft that has declined
in demand over the years. Nomads strive to develop new and exciting
patterns using this technique to ensure a living wage for dyers
in India.
- HAND BLOCK
PRINTING – Wooden blocks are carved to create the
most beautiful and magical prints. The fabric is printed by
hand in a labour intensive process. The work is carried out
by an entire village and this craft is passed down through the
generations. Block printing work is concentrated in drought
ridden regions of Rajasthan and the communities depend on demand
for this type of printing to ensure continued living in their
villages.
- HAND
EMBROIDERY – Detailing on our garments adds a unique
charm to the finished piece. Hand stitching has recently taken
on a new spotlight with many pieces having a simple running
stitch to give a modern feel to the garment. This provides income
for workers who are more craft based and can allow women to
work from home and continue to care for their children at home.
- HAND-LOOM &
HAND-SPUN – Many of our coats are made from a heave
weave of cotton that is made by hand in southern India. This
tradition of making the cloth gives the finished garment a uniquely
textured feel which cannot be made by machine. The time required
to make the cloth is lengthily and your purchase of these garments
provides a vital livelihood for the weavers.
- ORGANIC COTTON – Originally this was the only way that cotton
was grown. In recent times a new wave of interest in eco fashion
has generated a fresh demand for organic cotton. Sustainable
fashion means that the cotton is grown in conventional methods,
ensuring healthy workers and preservation of the environment.
- RECYCLED FABRICS – Nomads reuses vintage
silk sari to make a wonderful collection into our Nomads Silk
range. This has been a best selling range for many years and
helps our suppliers to source fabric without the cost of manufacturing.
We also use some waste fabric in our Nomads Bag Collection.
This further promotes our range of sustainable fashion.
- TARA PROJECT – Nomads have recently teamed up with the TARA
PROJECT to create a charming jewellery collection. TARA
is a direct action group in Delhi that helps to promote community
projects such as building schools and forming support groups.
Their focus is to approach sweatshops where children are working
and to encourage them to leave the factory and attend their
free schools. Nomads look forward to continued collaboration
with this project and needs your support!
