Blog-Autumn Winter 2009 Collection

October 2009

It's been a busy month don't miss the second part to this month's blog
Vicky and Jo's trip to India

India Day UK – India Trip

How coincidental it is sometimes how the big wide world can seem so much smaller in terms of celebration. Only a stones throw from our warehouse the local Launceston Steam Railway held an all singing all dancing “India Days Event”. The inspiration came from the loan of an original Darjeeling steam engine painted in a deep royal blue and decorated with bright garlands reminiscent of marigolds.

Styled carriages by Nomads When we were asked if we'd like to take part in this 3 day event we really couldn't resist! Dexter was eager to learn how to wear a sari...well to help us wear one! And Shallon and I thought it might be a fun idea to decorate the insides of the carriages with old torrans and hangings in hand embroidered vivid floral designs. It proved to be a bit of a challenge what with stringing together many old pieces of cloth and hanging carefully so as not to damage the wooden carriages. We even created a boudoir themed one with a peachy pink sari ceiling and little hanging floral printed fabric necklaces.

Shallon and Dexter set up a market style table with examples of traditional Indian embroidered bags and handmade jewellery. Along side were stall holders selling books and artefacts from India. Prayer flags flapped about in the wind and sometimes misty rain came to remind us we were in England – delicious curry scents came from the restaurant (which of course we had to try!)

By the time this event was over Dexter had almost mastered the art of tying a sari – seven folds in place.

Dex eagerly awaiting crowds from the train… We raised a nice little pot of money for the DRCS (Darjeeling Railway Community Support) charity by selling bindis. This charity works towards raising funds to help improve essential medical facilities along the railway lines in India. Some of the medical centres are so antiquated that the needles are kept in glass cabinets – very old fashioned big metal kinds – and appear to be on display. Drugs that we take for granted like penicillin are not readily available and so this charity helps to improve not only the centres themselves but also to stock them with up to date medicines.

All in all it was a great 3 days of connecting with our neighbours and meeting new people who have a passion for India...not to mention steam trains!

Vicky getting down in the "Disco Rickshaw"

Vicky and Jo's trip to India

How quickly a year has gone by – time again to make our annual trip to Rajasthan. It seemed strange leaving such hot weather behind us but glad that England was having a bit of an Indian summer at last. Arriving in Delhi brought the familiar sounds of horns beeping and humid heat to welcome us

.
We had meetings with our jewellery suppliers Tara Project and had a fun day stringing beads along side the sample makers. It was great to have almost instant pieces made before our eyes – and to work on the new colour selection for next summer’s collection.

We met a social worker who works for the project who told us many stories about her work and commitment to improving the lives, particularly those of women and children. Also the micro financing which has helped many women start businesses without the high interest rates of black market money lenders. She spoke strongly about empowering women and the importance of the work she does towards gaining gender equality.

Our next destination was the Pink city of Jaipur. Our travelling began with a rather hectic ride to the airport – unbeknown to us, although we were taking a domestic flight, this flew out of the international airport. Our taxi dropped us off and left before we realised our mistake and so were left with only a short amount of time to transfer to the correct airport in time before check in closed!
For some reason which seems strange at an airport...there didn't seem to be any available taxis to take us...so a security guard quickly ushered us into a rickshaw...2 ladies and 2 suitcases seemed like a bit of a tight squeeze (but compared with how many people you see squashed into rickshaws I guess we were pretty average for Indian style travelling). What we thought would take only 5 minutes stretched to 20 and so with much sweating and hanging on we arrived at the correct airport just about on time to make our flight...in fact we even had time for a very nice latte!

We were relieved to arrive in Jaipur...camels are still a form of transport here, along with bikes, scooters, motorbikes, rickshaws, cars, and buses...all crammed into the roads...like a crazy maze of driving that somehow seems to work!
Visiting our garment suppliers in a maze of samples and fabrics we met with our designer, Sue Curl…who is dedicated to promoting block print and tie dye in her designs. Block print and tie dye are having a revival which is all about handmade craft, which we think is key to the future of sustainable fashion. We can’t say too much about next summers styles here…but handloom is a key focus in the most stunning jackets and coats…along with a fabulous collection of dresses. So it’s going to be a jacket and dress season we feel for next summer. Trousers seem to be a big request by many of our customers…so Vicky and I endured to select a variety of styles touching on designs led by the east with cotton comfort in mind.

During our visit to our supplier’s workshops and factories we took time to inspect and meet with many of the craftspeople. It was good to see them looking so happy and to see all of our products being made in the flesh. One of our suppliers is currently building a hospital local to his factory which will service all his employees and the local community.

Vicky and I visited the work site to see how the construction is going. We hope that completion of the build should be finished by the end of this year. This area of Jaipur is in desperate need for medical facilities so it is going to be a great benefit to the community once the project is up and running.

Leaving Jaipur behind us we hit the road for our 4 hour trek to rural Pushkar where we always seem to have an attack of “India Eyes”. This term refers to the way that the initial impact of colour when arriving in India somehow becomes a little desensitized after being there for about a week!

All the brightest colours seem to become the first ones we choose and our eyes just don’t see colours the same as we do back in the UK. I guess that’s one way we seem to select such fabulous prints and colours for summer! But you will just have to wait and see. The Ashrams held their ritual chanting throughout the last night of our trip which left me a little burry eyed…however Vicky’s great deep sleeping seemed to keep her rested through the chanting which started every hour. Interestingly the chanting we found out was done by 4 or 5 elderly men through a loud speaker and the theme was a type of chant connected with staying awake through the night hours (no kidding!) It’s all part of the experience of India which we embrace while at the same time being a little zoned out!

Then, back to Jaipur for bit of a last minute sari and pashmina shopping! And onto Delhi for our final fly home. All in all it was a hot and hectic trip which seemed to wrap up our next summer’s collection nicely – bringing final touches and accessories into the picture. But more so than this it was a great opportunity to meet up and spend time with our suppliers and to understand how our products are made, discovering new fabrics and sourcing ideas for future developments. India really is a place of extreme discovery and we hope you enjoy all the new designs that will be showcased soon.

From India with Love from Jo and Vicky
