We're thrilled to now be officially GOTS certified! When Duncan and Vicky first started the Nomads dream, they were buying ready made products from India, so we weren’t perhaps as involved with the production process as we are now. It wasn’t until a few years later, when we began to produce our own clothing - from design through to manufacture - that we really became aware of some of the bad practices that were prevalent in the industry. We knew from then on that creating beautiful clothing whilst following ethical and sustainable practices would be at the core of the Nomads journey.
It was obvious to us that the only way to do sustainable business in India was by being fair and honest which involves having a lot of trust with our suppliers. We have always been believers of the ‘Trade not Aid’ ethos, and we are proud to have developed and nurtured business channels with India, which has added to their economy whilst establishing the Nomads brand.
This fair trade supply process, together with our environmental awareness, means that we are now delighted to be able to add GOTS certification to our list of achievements. This is something that we have all been carefully working towards, and there was a big cheer in the office when the certificate finally arrived!
GOTS certification is the gold standard for sustainable processing of textiles. The guidelines are strictly adhered to, and the verification process is carried out by independent companies, with facilities being physically inspected to verify standards are met.
GOTS approved products must contain at least 70% organic fibre content (ours generally contain 100%)
GOTS approved products never contain potentially harmful chemicals which can be found in conventional textile production.
GOTS approved companies are better for the environment (by managing their environmental impact, have high social standards, reduce energy and review water usage).
GOTS means safe working conditions, no discrimination and no child labour.
GOTS approved products have the entire supply chain verified, even the farms must have certification to a legally recognised standard.
The details matter! Buttons, threads, zips have to also meet strict residue criteria of GOTS.
