How to Organise Your Workspace for the New Year

Organise Your Workspace 1

It’s the start of a new year (and a new decade!), so what better time to have a bit of a declutter? Make your messy workspace a thing of the past with these simple organisation tips:

Start from Scratch

Getting everything organised will be much easier if you start with a blank desk. Clear everything off the top and start again. Remove items from the drawers (if you have them) and keep everything together on a separate table or on the floor so you can go through it later. Once the initial clutter is out of the way, you’ll be able to assess exactly how you want your desk to look.

Update your Space

Look around your desk for anything that’s no longer current. This might include things like outdated calendars, old mail, last season’s magazines, etc. Find fresh replacements for these objects and throw away the out of date items or, if you’re really attached to them, pop them into storage.

Keep Your Most-Used Items Close at Hand

If you find yourself reaching for certain desk items a lot, the best thing to do is to make sure they’re accessible. Give some thought to how frequently you reach for certain things on your desk and arrange them in order of importance. By taking this approach, you can streamline your working process and put an end to scrabbling around for THAT pen!

Keep Accessories to One Side

Every desk needs a notebook, a pencil cup and a trinket or two, but keeping everything on your desktop can make it difficult to clear your mind and get to work. At the very least, make sure there's a clear space for your computer and plenty of empty room to write and spread out.

Whilst We’re on the Topic, Stick to a "One In, One Out" Rule

Though this rule usually applies to wardrobes, keeping a maximum number of things on your desk is a good rule of thumb. Got a new paperweight? Time to say goodbye to the old one. Replaced your hand cream with something a bit fancier? Take the old one home. Don’t end up with a desk that looks like a museum of curiosities!

Clean It Before You Leave It

If you tend to have a lot piling up on your desk during the day or while you’re working—like stacks of notes, craft scraps, used post-its, etc.—it’s always better to have a little clean of your desk at the end of the day so you can start afresh tomorrow!
