Merry and Bright – three ideas for a festive home

Well, it's December 1st. We will skip the: 'Where'd that come from?' (But seriously?!) We will hop along – merrily – to getting festive and stretching those craft skills once again. A few of our favourite homemade ideas to celebrate the heady scents and deep colours of naure at this time, either for your own home or a lucky special someone else.

These wreaths as seen on Local Milk are simple to make and give a wholesome, natural feel to your decorations. No sparkly tinsel here. You can get a willow wreath from John Lewis or similar and then customise it as you wish by adding the greens at your whim; eucalyptus, fir tree trimmings and thistle look especially good. Pop one of these on the mantlepiece, or on a linen covered table and fill with candles. Add a little sprig of eucalyptus on to each guest's plate before serving dinner for a pretty touch.

The scent of oranges and cloves is traditional, warming and welcoming. A fab idea for a project with children, one that will be sure to become a tradition for them – keeping that scent always brewing. The image is from Natural Suburbia – the cinnamon sticks and acorns are an example of how you can embellish your orange slices, then turn them into a garland, or decorations for your home and tree.

You will need:
Chopping board

Cut the fruit in thin slices, then place on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Add in some cloves. Put the oven at 75 C and after one hour, turn them over, then leave for another hour. Once they are dried, they can be turned into decorations for your home.

We also love this Christmas in a jar idea by Dandee. The gift recipient pours the contents into a saucepan, fills the jar with water, adds the water to the saucepan and brings the pan to a simmer. When you simmer the ingredients in a saucepan it fills your home with the scent of Christmas.

You will need:
Glass jars
Coffee filters/ Fabric such as hessian for the lid
5 cinnamon sticks
1 dried lemon slice
1 dried orange slice
1/2 cup whole cloves
1 tbs. nutmeg
1/4 cup whole allspice
1 tbs. bay leaf pieces
3 dried apple slices
