A Nomads print story

Have you ever wondered how a Nomads print comes to life? We caught up with newest design team member Sarah, as her first print design is released.

The launch of a new season is always an exciting time in the Nomads office – it’s when we can finally share all the hard work that’s been going on behind the scenes with you! This season is especially exciting for Sarah, as it sees the launch of her very first Nomads print design.

After graduating in Textile Design from Plymouth Art College, I was lucky enough to spend 2 weeks with Nomads on a work placement. Spending time with all departments within the company gave me a fantastic insight into the workings of a wonderful, ethical small business. For the most part of my placement I worked alongside Kate, Vicky and Sian in the design team who were busily designing prints and developing fabrics for Spring/Summer19. I remember enjoying being part of the excitement and energy that comes with designing new-season colours, patterns and stories. I happened to be in the right place at the right time, because a job opened at Nomads shortly after I finished my placement here, and I was thrilled to be offered the position… and here I am over a year on delighted to see my first print in production!

The Winnow Print design process began during my placement with Nomads and was inspired by the geometric motifs and patterns featured on old encaustic cement tiles. Using this rich source of inspiration, I sketched out several simple symmetrical motifs which I then overlaid in various combinations until myself and the team settled on a final motif. Once the motif was in repeat, we recoloured the design to sit within the planned colour stories and prepared it for screen printing ready to send to our fair-trade partners in India. My favourite Winnow print piece is the  ¾ Sleeve Cotton Voile Shirt – which is available now!

Since beginning my new role at Nomads, I have been working with head designer Kate on lots of new exciting prints for upcoming collections, and I can’t wait to see these in production in the future!
