Shop: Pomegranate, Bristol
In the first of our shop profiles, we chat to Pomegranate, based in a 19th century arcade, in Clifton Village, Bristol.
A little like a relaxed walk-in wardrobe full of cotton, linen and knitted textures, rich colours and engaging details. Our kimono hangs on the door like patterned artwork and a plethora of silver necklaces sit pretty, framed, awaiting their pairing. The garments are displayed simply and stylishly in groups, the floor is polished wood and there’s plenty of space for encouraged leisurely browsing. Outside, bunting drapes throughout the arcade and next door is an antique furniture shop full of a mix of mid-century decorative, useful and unusual pieces.
Vanessa sits behind her desk and greets customers with a welcoming smile. “I like the interaction, to chat to my customers. They’re very loyal and always tell me their thoughts on the collection in store,” she says. Now in its second year with Vanessa, who previously owned a sweet shop across the arcade, at the helm, she has moved Pomegranate in a more ethical direction. From predominantly Italian designs, to fair trade and organic fashion in-keeping with the shop and its customers’ style. Vanessa says, “I want to promote ethical fashion – especially in The Green Capital of Bristol! Nomads is ideal.”
This autumn/winter is the first season that Vanessa has stocked Nomads. She’s a particular fan of the more bohemian pieces in the collection. She picks out the boho dress with its fine embroidery, the beautifully versatile kimono and the cream blouse. “I think the collection is really quite lovely. I’ve also seen the boho look; tassels, embroidery, in both the high street shops and on the catwalk this season,” says Vanessa.
However, rather than the fashion forward attributes, it is the timeless quality – in styles and high level of manufacture – that really appeals about Nomads. “I love that it’s fair trade. People need to think about where their clothes come from. A good quality piece of clothing that will last for years – it won’t date.
“The style is also fantastic because it’s both chic and smart, without being very formal. The pieces are relaxed and actually, brilliant for workwear. I had a teacher in the shop who said that she loves Nomads because she finds it stylish and professional, but also amazingly comfortable, breathable and very easy to move in. People always comment on the feel of the cotton. So soft and incredible quality.”
Though she is aware of the power of the internet in retail, Vanessa loves delivering that personable service. She believes in what she does and enjoys it. “I love helping people, encouraging them to try something a bit different. Curating my shop’s collection every season is a joy. I’m happy to stock Nomads, it’s a perfect fit for Bristol!”
