Slow fashion in a fast world
There’s been lots of talk in the fashion industry recently about the use of chemicals in certain production methods. We’ve always been an environmentally minded company, and consider the impact that each step of our journey takes, and actively seek to use environmentally friendly materials and methods at every opportunity.
Shopping with us means shopping with a clear conscience because –
We do not use Formaldehyde, Azo, Phthalates, Alkylphenols or PVC in any form – which are harmful chemicals commonly used in the fast fashion industry.
We use GOTS certified organic cotton - Organic cotton is always the best choice of cotton because it’s the kindest to the environment, the growers and to the wearer. Grown naturally, the soil requires less water and maintains good levels of fertility. The fact that no harmful chemicals are used not only makes it better for the environment, but also for the cotton growers themselves. Cotton carrying the GOTS symbol has not only been grown organically, it has been processed organically too. This means that inputs such as dyes and inks have met strict biodegradability and toxicity rules and waste water is treated before it's let out into the environment - protecting local ecosystems and communities. As well as these environmental points, GOTS ensures that strict social criteria is met, meaning that the garments are produced by fairly treated workers – something that is very important to Nomads.
We are increasingly using more Viscose - Viscose is made from Bamboo pulp so is a natural fibre that is both breathable and biodegradable. The process of producing viscose does involve chemicals so we ensure that our dyeing units and fabric manufacturing units install a water treatment plant, so that the processing water is treated before being released back into the environment.
We use environmentally approved dyes - Vibrant colours, prints and fabric finishes may have an impact on the catwalk, but many of these are achieved with toxic chemicals (ever ended up with blue legs after wearing a new pair of jeans?!). Textile dyeing is the second largest polluter of clean water globally, after agriculture. Many of the chemicals used are banned or strictly regulated in various countries because they are toxic, bio-accumulative, disruptive to hormones and carcinogenic. Fear not – we only ever use azo free, environmentally approved dyes to create our wonderful prints.
We think about the bigger picture – The majority of our products are produced by our fair trade partners in India – and we then transport them to the UK for distribution. Unfortunately this transportation will inevitably have an impact on the environment, but we choose to transport our goods via sea freight rather than by air to minimalise our carbon footprint. This is an area that we are continually looking to improve, and keep up to date with improvements and developments in environmentally friendly transport options.
We also use fully biodegradable packing – your order will arrive to you in a Nomads brown paper package, made from FSC sustainable sources, and the individual garment packaging is made from fully biodegradable non gmo-cornstarch, that importantly, doesn’t require sunlight to break down.
What does FCS mean? In order to be given FSC certification a forest must be managed in an environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable manner. This is what makes the FSC system unique and ensures that a forest is well-managed from the protection of indigenous people’s rights to the methods of felling trees. Forests that meet these strict standards are given FSC certification and the timber allowed to carry the FSC label.
