The Twelve Months of Nomads

We see December as a special month of reflection. With Winter Solstice celebrations marking such an important time of year, we thought we would share our journey of 2016 with you. We would also like to thank you all for your continuing support, it means the world to us.

January was a particularly exciting month for me as it was when I started working for Nomads. I was given the warmest of welcomes by the team and my first month literally flew by. Developing my skills and getting to know the importance of Fair Trade Fashion was incredible and very eye opening.

I started the year taking a fresh social media approach. Sharing our ethos and upping our content and posts so we could spread the word about our Fair Trade, ethical collections.

February is when we drop our Spring range to you all. It is so exciting unveiling the new collections as we have worked so hard together. We send out fabulous catalogues designed by our Graphic Designer, Claire, and our website manager Lesley’s hard work is finally out to see.

February is our sales team’s busiest month. James, Shallon and Jo worked their socks off with our warehouse team to ensure our stockists receive their orders in time for the next season. They also take the following season’s collection to Trade shows to meet our clients and start showing the next season.

Our incredible Senior designer Kate and creative director Vicky head to India twice a year to work alongside our Indian colleagues, check the conditions of our manufacturers and meet to improve communication.  It was Kate’s first visit as Senior Designer for Nomads, so it was a big trip for her to meet our Fair Trade suppliers and to be introduced to Manoj, who oversees all our work that takes place in India. They also visit the markets of Rajasthan to seek inspiration for the next collection. I stay behind and start new research on colour, trends and print ready for Kate’s return and her next collection (which is almost as exciting…)

This April our creative team finalised and styled our Autumn Winter 2016 campaign. We celebrated our Cornish roots and kept the shoot local. It was the first time for Kate and I to meet our amazing photographer Simon and make-up artist Kate, who are a complete dream to work with. One of the most rewarding parts of our creative team’s job is when our new collections come together for the first time’ ready to be photographed for our look books.

We decided to take a new angle with our online journal back in May. As such a close knit company, we decided to let you all into our summer wardrobe secrets. We also wanted to introduce you to our staff members and their crucial roles in Nomads.

June saw the launch of our Spring Summer 2017 campaign shoot. This is Kate’s first collection for Nomads and the first time for her to see the collection together as a whole, outside of our design studio. We were blessed with a scorching hot week and blue skies. Our new model, Tess was perfect for Kate’s collection and we had our most successful shoot to date.

July is our favourite month in the studio. We all popped off on our holidays or to dance at festivals – or both. We made sure we took our Nomads with us though. I talked you through my favourite dresses and which pieces I wore to festivals.

August is Trade show time again. This month we were showing Kate’s Spring 2017 collection in London and Birmingham. I was lucky enough to go to a show with James, our studio manager. I met lots of our fabulous trade customers and it really opened my eyes with regards to what our customers would like from us. After the show, I felt like I really understood a new side to Nomads and my designing has been influenced by how much I learnt at the trade show.

Vicky and Kate returned to see our colleagues in India with Duncan in September. They worked on  developing upcoming collections for both Spring 2017 and Autumn 2017 including the new fits of the garments, the colours, printing techniques and developing new ideas to keep our collections fresh and contemporary. Kate and Vicky made sure they had time to visit local markets and shops to look out for fabric and print ideas. I stayed in the studio and started the research for Spring Summer 2018.

October saw a super creative month for Kate and I. We combined our research on colour, trends and print and knuckled down to make head way on prints for Spring 2018. Can you believe they are all sent off now? We have designed new nightwear for next winter and we have also started a menswear shirt collection – watch this space.

Last month we reunited with Simon our photographer and shot Kate’s second amazing collection for Nomads -  Autumn Winter 2017. The rich and warm hues of her range complimented the Autumnal weather wonderfully. This range features more new shapes, exclusive prints designed in house, cosy knits and new accessories. We also have something brand new for Nomads, which we are beyond excited about. We teamed up with talented James from Mayhem Projects to work on a fashion film for Nomads and we cannot wait to show you all.

Now we are all getting ready and baking delicious treats for our Christmas party tomorrow.

We have a lot of things to be excited about for next year – more collections from Kate, new location shoots and a fashion film. We are also branching out and trying some trade shows in Germany as well as taking part in the phenomenal movement of Fashion Revolution.

So on behalf of Nomads, I wish you an incredible winter solstice, Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.
