A year of conscious shopping

If resolutions are a must, then we are championing a year of buying more consciously. Here is a round up of our tips on making eco-conscious shopping decisions in 2019.

We work hard to ensure that Nomads products are produced ethically, with great consideration to our carbon footprint, and the impact our sourcing and production has on the environment around us. This is a subject we feel passionate about, and something that we try to emulate with conscious shopping in our day to day lives.
We’ve been flying the flag for sustainable slow fashion since we started nearly 30 years ago, and we are thrilled that the world seems to finally be focusing on the need to rethink our consumerist habits. There are now a countless (and easy!) amount of ways to shop more consciously.

Invest in quality -
When it comes to your wardrobe, avoid mass produced garments made from synthetic fibres. The price tag might be tempting, but the damage caused to the environment makes spending a little more a no-brainer. As well as the initial production process of synthetic textiles, the vibrant colours, prints and fabric finishes found on the high street are often achieved with toxic chemicals, with textile dyeing being the second largest polluter of clean water globally, after agriculture.
To combat this, look for brands that use environmentally approved Azo free dyes – we are big fans of colour and print at Nomads, proof that you needn’t sacrifice on style! Choosing natural fibres over synthetics also means less use of the washing machine – minimising environmental impact as well as your electricity bill. Natural fibres such as organic cotton are breathable, so you’ll find you can wear them more times before they fail the sniff test!
It’s unavoidable that sustainable fashion often falls at a higher price point, so choose investment pieces for your wardrobe that you’ll wear again and again, rather than throw-away faddy styles just for the season. To start making small steps towards buying sustainable natural clothing, look at labels and see what the garments are made from. Start asking clothing brands questions, if they are honest and open they should have tons of advice and information on their website, actively promoting natural fibres, like we do! - Nomads natural fibres.

We use natural fibres such as organic cotton and viscose

Find plastic-free alternatives –
If you didnt see at least one anti-plastic advertising campaign in 2018, where were you?! We all know how harmful plastic is to the natural world – it’s a durable material made to last forever, yet 33 percent of it is used once and then discarded.

Ditch bottled water -
Not only does it come in a plastic bottle, but tremendous resources are used to extract, bottle, and ship bottled water. Get a reusable stainless-steel bottle and fill it up before you leave the house, then top up at one of the thousands of free refill-stations across the UK.

Nobody needs a plastic bag –
This one is a no-brainer and we know the majority of you will have abandoned the plastic bag a long time ago, but just in case your plastic-free vessel needs updating, our cotton canvas shopper does the job perfectly!

Find your local refill store –
We were thrilled when our local Refill store opened in Truro, where we can refill our own containers or use recycled paper bags provided to stock up on store cupboard basics like rice, pasta, cereals, spices, grains, pulses, dried fruits, nuts and seeds as well as body care and household cleaning products. There are wonderful independent shops like this popping up all over the UK – so find your nearest one now!

Do you really need it? -
We are all familiar with the pang of excitement from an impulse buy, and whilst treating yourself every now and again is a great mood-booster, do you REALLY need another velvet cushion? A little forward planning can help with this dilemma, from highlighting occasions in your calendar that a new outfit is absolutely called for, to planning your weekly meals in advance to avoid any unnecessary waste.

Adopting conscious shopping habits is a great way of informing manufacturers that we want change – if you are already championing conscious shopping, or will be adapting your shopping habits in 2019, then let us know!
